Since the 15th century , an area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda,
Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale has mysteriously claimed an untold number
of ships , planes and lives. Even today, the region remains a serious danger
to travellers there were three reported incidents in 2004 alone. Perhaps the
most famous case was that of Flight 19 a group of American bombers that went
missing in December 1945 , while training over the Atlantic . The bombers
encountered unusual phenomena and irregular compass readings, despite the
clemency of the weather and the experience of the pilots . When the five
planes failed to return , the Navys official report could not explain the
incident, attributing the disappearance to causes or reasons unknown.
Also known as the Devils Triangle, the area has been the subject of conspiracy
theories and paranormal speculation for over half a century . Some of the more
bizarre theories have suggested the involvement of giant sea creatures, UFOs
and portals to different dimensions. A more scientific explanation, meanwhile,
has pointed towards the existence of huge fields of methane hydrates on the
continental shelves which alter the density of the surrounding water and air.
No theory, however, has been proven.
